A recent survey conducted by Business Insider, in collaboration with YouGov, sheds light on the trust perceptions of adult Gen Zers towards major social media platforms. With over 1,800 Americans surveyed across five generations, including more than 600 respondents from Gen Z (defined as individuals born between 1997 and 2012), the survey aimed to gauge trustworthiness perceptions among different age groups.

YouTube: A Beacon of Trust

Among adult Gen Zers aged 18 to 26, YouTube emerged as the most trusted social media platform, with 59% considering it somewhat or very trustworthy. This sentiment is notably higher compared to other platforms surveyed. Only 28% of respondents found YouTube somewhat or very untrustworthy, highlighting its strong reputation for reliability and credibility within the Gen Z demographic.

Instagram’s Divisive Perception

In contrast to YouTube’s widespread trust, Instagram’s trustworthiness among adult Gen Zers proved somewhat polarizing. While 40% of respondents regarded Instagram as trustworthy, an equal 45% expressed distrust towards the platform. This ambivalence underscores the mixed perceptions surrounding Instagram’s reliability and authenticity within the Gen Z cohort.

Facebook: Struggling with Trust

Facebook, once a dominant force in social media, faced a significant trust deficit among adult Gen Zers, with 60% considering it somewhat or very untrustworthy. Only 28% of respondents deemed Facebook trustworthy, reflecting a sharp decline in trust levels compared to platforms like YouTube and Instagram. This decline may be attributed to Facebook’s history of controversies and diminishing relevance among younger demographics.

TikTok: A Mixed Bag

Despite its popularity among Gen Z users, TikTok also encountered skepticism regarding its trustworthiness, with 57% of adult Gen Zers expressing doubts about the platform. However, TikTok fared slightly better than Facebook in terms of trust ratings, with 30% of respondents viewing it as somewhat or very trustworthy. Nevertheless, concerns over data privacy and security, particularly regarding its parent company ByteDance, persisted among Gen Z users.

Factors Influencing Trust

The survey results reflect broader trends in social media usage and perception among adult Gen Zers. Platforms like Facebook and TikTok have faced scrutiny over privacy and security issues, contributing to diminished trust levels among younger demographics. Meanwhile, YouTube’s status as a reliable source of diverse content and information has solidified its position as the most trusted platform among Gen Z users.
