Understanding WhatsApp's New Privacy Policy

WhatsApp recently announced its new controversial privacy policy, raising concerns among users about the safety of their data. Here’s a breakdown of what you need to know about this policy and its implications.

Implementation of the New Policy

WhatsApp clarified to the Delhi High Court that its new privacy policy came into effect on May 15th as planned. However, the deadline for compliance with the updated policy has not been extended. Accounts not adhering to the new terms won’t be deleted immediately, but there will be limitations imposed gradually.

Implications for Non-Compliance

Users who have not accepted the new privacy policy are still able to use the app after three days since the policy came into effect. However, they will face limitations on certain features and functionalities. These include restrictions on setting status updates, forwarding messages, managing broadcast lists, creating new groups, quoting messages, sending media within the app, and more.

Consequences of Extended Non-Acceptance

If users do not accept the new terms for an extended period, typically more than a couple of weeks, their app will be completely disabled. While WhatsApp won’t delete accounts and chats, users will only regain access after accepting the terms. There’s also a possibility of account deletion due to inactivity after a certain period, as per reports.

Acceptance of New Terms

Accepting the new terms does not grant Facebook access to more user data. Users can continue using WhatsApp for private communication as before. However, interactions with WhatsApp business accounts may vary. Regular business accounts function similarly to personal chats, while ‘special’ business accounts utilizing cloud providers may share data for targeted advertising on Facebook.

Caution with Business Accounts

Users are advised to exercise caution when engaging with business accounts, especially those using cloud providers. It’s essential to check the privacy policy of the business before sharing sensitive information. Avoiding the use of Facebook Shop, an optional feature for business accounts, can also enhance privacy protection.

Individual Choice and Safety

Ultimately, whether to accept the new terms or not is an individual decision. For most users, accepting the terms will not significantly impact their privacy unless they engage extensively with special business accounts and Facebook Shop. Both features are optional, and users have the freedom to opt-out if they prioritize privacy.
