Exploring Livestreaming as a Side Hustle

Jotham Lim, a 33-year-old based in Singapore, embarked on a journey that led him from a full-time corporate job to becoming a successful livestreamer. Initially working at one of Singapore’s largest healthcare groups, Lim ventured into live selling on TikTok Shop as a side hustle in October 2022. This involved hosting livestreams where he showcased and sold various products directly to viewers.

The Transition to Full-Time Livestreaming

As Lim’s side hustle gained momentum, he observed that his income from livestreaming matched that of his corporate job by October of the following year. Feeling stretched thin by juggling both endeavors, Lim made the bold decision to transition to full-time livestreaming. With livestream sessions lasting between two to four hours and attracting hundreds of viewers, Lim found himself earning an appearance fee ranging from SG$500 to SG$800 per hour, supplemented by commission from product sales.

The Livestreaming Experience

During livestream sessions, Lim adopts a high-energy approach, engaging viewers through lively interaction and dynamic demonstrations of products. He emphasizes the importance of entertainment over hard selling, employing interactive elements like games to maintain viewer interest. Behind the scenes, he leverages the TikTok Shop dashboard to analyze viewer engagement metrics and tailor his approach accordingly.

Challenges and Rewards

While Lim’s income has more than doubled since embracing full-time livestreaming, he acknowledges the seasonal nature of the industry. Major events like 11.11 and Black Friday necessitate extensive streaming hours to capitalize on time-sensitive discounts. Despite the demanding schedule, Lim finds fulfillment in his newfound career, citing the autonomy and excitement it offers compared to his previous corporate role.

Looking Ahead

Lim’s journey underscores the transformative potential of livestreaming as a viable career path in the digital age. By leveraging platforms like TikTok Shop, creators like Lim can carve out lucrative opportunities while engaging audiences in novel ways. As he continues to navigate the dynamic landscape of livestreaming, Lim remains optimistic about the future, driven by his passion for interaction and entrepreneurship.
