The PAMS Healthcare Hub in Newman marks a significant milestone as the first primary healthcare facility in the region. Situated in Newman, 1200km north of Perth, with a substantial Aboriginal population, the project serves as a vital healthcare resource for the Shire of East Pilbara, an area equivalent in size to Japan. With a focus on the local Martu and Nibali Aboriginal communities, the hub provides access to culturally appropriate health services, bridging a crucial gap in healthcare provision.

Community-Centric Design

The project epitomizes the client ethos of placing wellness at the heart of the community. Designed to meet best practice standards for regional primary healthcare, the hub integrates various facilities, including a primary health clinic, PAMS head office, and four-chair hemodialysis unit. By offering a range of services, from general practice to allied health facilities, the hub aims to minimize the need for Martu and Niaboli people to travel long distances to Perth for treatment, thereby reducing associated costs and mental health impacts.

Addressing Health Disparities

Aboriginal Controlled Community Health Services play a crucial role in tackling the health and social issues disproportionately affecting Aboriginal populations. Discrimination, cultural loss, and inadequate infrastructure often exacerbate these challenges, underscoring the importance of community-led healthcare initiatives like the PAMS Healthcare Hub. By providing accessible and culturally sensitive healthcare services, the hub strives to empower and uplift Aboriginal communities, fostering holistic wellbeing.

Sustainable Architecture

The architectural design of the hub reflects a commitment to sustainability and cultural resonance. Predominantly constructed using rammed earth, an abundant and sustainable material sourced directly from the site, the building embodies a deep connection to its surroundings. Beyond its environmental benefits, rammed earth architecture evokes a sense of place and belonging, resonating with Aboriginal culture and values.

A Beacon of Community Wellness

The PAMS Healthcare Hub represents a vital component of PAMS’ strategic plan to expand and strengthen healthcare delivery in the region. By placing the community at the forefront of health services and promoting inclusivity, the hub aims to increase presentation rates and enhance preventative health measures. Ultimately, its success will be measured by its ability to provide comprehensive care while honoring the traditions and aspirations of the local community. As a beacon of community wellness, the hub stands as a testament to the transformative power of community-centered healthcare initiatives.
