Scaler Academy Expands with First Acquisition

Scaler Academy, an edtech startup specializing in computer science courses for upskilling students, has made its inaugural acquisition by purchasing Delhi-based online learning platform, Coding Elements, in an all-cash transaction.
Acquisition Details
The deal, reportedly valued at approximately $1 million (₹8 crore), marks a significant move for Scaler Academy. Founded in 2017 by Mudit Goel, Coding Elements offers a range of computer science courses, including data science, machine learning, full-stack web and mobile app development, and coding courses for children. With 4,000 students enrolled, Coding Elements has also collaborated with the government think tank NITI Aayog to provide courses to 2 million students across 6,000 schools under the Atal Innovation Mission.
Strategic Implications
By integrating Coding Elements into its operations, Scaler Academy, headquartered in Bengaluru and established two years ago, aims to fortify its position in the professional upskilling sector. Mudit Goel, the founder of Coding Elements, has joined Scaler Academy as the strategy and product lead.
Future Plans
Abhimanyu Saxena, co-founder of Scaler, highlighted the significance of the acquisition in expanding the course offerings of the upskilling platform beyond core software engineering. He emphasized that the acquisition aligns with Scaler’s vision of becoming a premier virtual tech university. Saxena also indicated the company’s ongoing assessment of potential merger and acquisition opportunities that resonate with Scaler’s mission.
Company Background
Since its inception in 2019, Scaler Academy has attracted approximately 7,500 learners to its educational programs. The startup boasts backing from prominent investors such as Sequoia Capital, Tiger Global, and Rocket Internet.
Industry Trends
Scaler Academy’s acquisition of Coding Elements comes amid a broader trend of growth and investment in the edtech sector. Last week, Camp K12, an edtech startup focusing on online classes for children to learn coding and other skills, secured $12 million in funding to expand its reach and enhance its platform’s content offerings.
