Embracing Healthy Hedonism

Sense of Self Bathhouse, a collaborative project by Setsquare Studio, Chamberlain Architects, and Hearth Studio, introduces a novel approach to wellness centered around inclusivity, immersion, and thoughtful design. Housed within a repurposed warehouse in Melbourne’s inner-north, this innovative bathhouse features a range of amenities including a mineral bath, Hammam Steam room, Finnish sauna, verdant courtyard, and cold plunge pool.

A Journey of Self-Discovery

Sense of Self transcends conventional notions of wellness by fostering a deeper connection between individuals and their bodies, as well as their immediate environment. Unlike traditional spa settings characterized by sterile aesthetics and solitary experiences, Sense of Self is conceived as an empathetic space that prioritizes community, acceptance, and restoration. It invites guests on a transformative journey of healing, relaxation, and interpersonal connection.

Designing for Every Body

At the heart of Sense of Self is a commitment to inclusivity and accessibility. The design eschews traditional gendered layouts in favor of communal spaces, including change rooms and toilets equipped with ambulant facilities. By eliminating physical barriers and embracing diversity, Sense of Self ensures that every individual feels welcomed and accommodated. The layout is thoughtfully structured to guide users through the sequence of bathing rituals, emphasizing the harmonious relationship between body and space.

Inspired by Water

Drawing inspiration from the elemental essence of water, Sense of Self embodies the intrinsic qualities of fluidity, vitality, and renewal. Materials and forms are selected to reflect the dynamic nature of water, from decorative glass elements that refract light to cascading water walls symbolizing its power. Natural materials such as concrete, travertine, and sandstone are crafted to evolve over time, mirroring the erosion and transformation observed in nature. The incorporation of lush vegetation further reinforces the restorative properties of water, creating a serene oasis for rejuvenation.

Cultivating Communal Bathing

Sense of Self aspires to establish a culture of communal bathing unique to the Australian context. By reimagining the traditional bathhouse experience and infusing it with contemporary design principles, it offers a space where individuals can embark on a shared journey of self-discovery and well-being. Through its immersive environment and inclusive ethos, Sense of Self invites guests to embrace the art of healthy hedonism and cultivate a deeper sense of connection with themselves and others.
