Redefining Urban Recreation: TRAMO by Selgascano + Andreu Carulla

Project Overview
TRAMO is the second initiative by Proyectos Conscientes in Madrid, following Mo de Movimiento. Led by Selgascano and Andreu Carulla, this project aims to redefine urban recreation while promoting responsible consumption. The collaborative team includes bioengineer Ismael Caballero, sustainability expert Cristina Freire, and Zimenta Obras y Proyectos.
Respectful Design Approach
Selgascano’s design philosophy for TRAMO prioritizes respecting the original space. The renovation minimizes modifications and new elements, ensuring they complement rather than overshadow the existing structure. The space is multi-level, creating diverse ambiences with the kitchen as the visual focal point, showcasing slender concrete trusses and steel cables reminiscent of 1950s Madrid architecture.
Sustainable Practices
Toxic elements like polyurethane foam and acrylic paints were avoided, along with a linear construction model. TRAMO implemented closed circuits during construction, utilizing recycled wood for various elements like chair backs and doors. Andreu Carulla’s modular furniture system, including over one thousand ceramic modules, aligns with sustainable construction principles.
Modular Design and Energy Efficiency
The ceramic modules serve a dual purpose of thermal regulation and seating, contributing to TRAMO’s nearly 100% energy self-sufficiency. The restaurant employs a misting system for temperature and humidity control, while also reusing rainwater and sink water. Acoustic comfort is ensured through recycled wool panels, repurposed textiles, and handcrafted elements like lamps made from reclaimed construction materials.
Holistic Sustainability
TRAMO’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond materials to energy management, water conservation, and acoustic comfort. The integration of natural elements and recycled materials not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also reinforces its status as an environmentally conscious dining space.
