The Shanghai Cofco Cultural and Health Center, conceptualized in 2016 by Steven Holl Architects, is envisioned as a vibrant hub for social interaction and community engagement. Situated amidst newly developed housing blocks along an existing canal, the center serves as a catalyst for fostering connections among residents through its expansive public spaces and park amenities.

Spatial Energy and Openness

In stark contrast to the repetitive architecture of the adjacent housing blocks, the design of the Cultural and Health Center embodies spatial dynamism and openness. Constructed with exoskeletal concrete, the buildings feature subtractive cuts that define the architectural language, shaping a central public space that beckons the entire community to partake in recreational and cultural activities.

Clocks and Clouds Concept

At the heart of the design philosophy lies the concept of “clocks and clouds,” where the landscape and the two new public buildings converge seamlessly. The landscape is articulated in large, clock-like circles, delineating the central public space, while the buildings exude a cloud-like quality characterized by porosity and transparency. The Cultural Center, elevated above a transparent glass base, houses a café and recreational areas, with a curved ramp offering continuous views of the surroundings.

Harmonizing with the Landscape

Both the Cultural and Health Centers are intricately integrated with the undulating contours of the landscape. Adorned with green sedum roofs, the buildings harmonize with the natural environment, further enhancing their visual cohesion with the surrounding landscape and apartment buildings.
