A Collaborative Endeavor

Soria Moria Sauna is a project born out of collaboration between the Telemark Canal Regional Park and Tokke Municipality. Part of the Tales of the Waterway initiative, this project aims to integrate art, architecture, and lighting design to showcase the unique landscape and cultural heritage of the Telemark region.

Inspired Architecture

The distinctive silhouette of Soria Moria Sauna mirrors the steep mountainsides that encircle the Bandak Lake, offering an architectural homage to the natural surroundings. Drawing inspiration from local building techniques, the structure features wooden shingle cladding adorned with gleaming golden shingles. This touch of gold pays homage to local folklore and serves as a nod to the historical contrast between the rustic inhabitants of Telemark and the affluent foreign travelers who once frequented the nearby Dalen Hotel.

Functional Design

Beyond its aesthetic appeal, Soria Moria Sauna serves a practical purpose, offering visitors a space to relax and rejuvenate. The structure houses a sauna, a changing room, and a covered seating area where guests can immerse themselves in the breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.

Integrating with Nature

Situated along the shoreline of the Bandak Lake, Soria Moria Sauna is elevated on stilts to accommodate the shallow waters, allowing for a seamless connection between land and lake. The design of the walkway and sauna building is intricately woven into the landscape, emphasizing the unique features of the Sigurdsevja inlet—a precise and characteristic natural formation that adds to the allure of the surroundings.

Collaborative Efforts

The development of Soria Moria Sauna was a collaborative effort involving a team of Nordic designers and artisans. Led by architect David Fjågesund of Feste Landscape/Architecture, the team also included landscape architect Inge Dahlman, lighting designer Tobias Olsson, artist Maira Änquist Klyvare, and Design Team Leader Lars Haakanes. Skorve, the contracted builders, utilized predominantly local materials, further enhancing the project’s connection to its surroundings.

Conclusion

Soria Moria Sauna stands as a testament to the rich cultural heritage and natural beauty of the Telemark region. By seamlessly blending traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design, this project not only offers a space for relaxation but also celebrates the timeless charm of the local landscape. As visitors immerse themselves in the warmth of the sauna and soak in the panoramic views, they are invited to embark on a journey of discovery and rejuvenation—a journey inspired by the spirit of Soria Moria.
